DESCRIPTION: EPW - John Penlington, Liverpool, gold fusee pocket chronometer with spring detent escapement and helical hairspring, 57mm, heavy 14K gold or better (tested) original consular case with misleading crowned 18 marking, case bearing Chester hallmarks for 1837, casemaker's "T A" marking in rectangular cameo, cream colored enamel dial, gold hour and minute hands, KWKS, capped spring detent escapement of unusual form, free-sprung bi-metallic balance with white metal timing screws that are likely platinum or palladium, trapezoidal weights connected by thin cross member presumably for compensation limiting, helical hairspring, diamond endstone, mvt marked "Chronometer," main plate with small aperture for viewing escapement action, gilt mvt with ornate floral engraved balance cock, s#236. Comes with an attractive early gold-filled key. Gross weight of assembled watch 101.9 dwt (158.6 g). The detent of this movement's escapement is of unusual form. Instead of continuing along in a straight line from its locking jewel position, it is instead L-shaped with the right angle occurring at the point of the locking jewel.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, has excess escapement noise when oriented in the pendant-up or the dial-down positions, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous gilt plates with some fine scratches; dial with some hls; excellent hands; case shows little wear, some dings to perimeter of rear; tight bow; good glass crystal.
ESTIMATE: $3000 - $4600
